Plants vs. Zombies: Retake the Lawn

Summary

PvZ: Retake the Lawn is a pixelated 2D top-down rougelike dungeon crawler based on the IP Plants vs Zombies. The player plays as Crazy Dave and traverses neighborhoods and backyards in pursuit of his stolen Taco, defeating zombies along the way. Throughout the handcrafted levels, the player will find plants with unique abilities and attack styles that they can add to their arsenal.

This game was a final project for a class, where a teammate and I formed a pair to collaborate on it for 3 weeks. It was fueled by passion for the original, with many more ideas/expansions designed, but not implemented for scope reasons. Currently, it has ammased over 24k views and 5k downloads on itch.io.

My Roles on this Project


Game Designer

  • Translated the designs and abilities of the plants/zombie characters from the original tower-defense IP into a rougelike game.

  • Designed the levels.

  • Collaborated with my teammate to create the game loop and mechanics, like vases, gravestones, chargeable weapons, and different enemy types.

  • Balanced the main and sub plants, along with the zombies, to make a fair experience for players.


Programmer

  • Programmed the main and sub plants' attacks/abilities.

  • Made the spawning system.

  • Integrated adaptive audio based on the current game state.
